Planets are set on their side by means of unimaginable impacts back in time.
The sky is full of mystery which we exist for and dwell upon.
And here in our oasis we live, love, kill and die. Pushing ever towards our mystifying destiny.
And in that paradise we step with our misguided graces. As people we move so fast.

The cosmos is rich and full of particles which run on their own rules. They move through us always, even now as you read. We are of particle dispersment through the ages. Gravity helps this process over the envelope of time. It is a folded envelope with particles from the beginning of these exquisite dramas.

From macroscopic to microscopic we flow in spite of ourselves in this expansive and ironically constrictive eddy. In this burbling river of time and coincidences we wander.
Simple bubbles we are in this stream.

Enjoy your convex nature until you burst.

And I for my part, as a shell of a man will float with my empty buoyancy into this vortex.

She was seeing things in the night as we drove across the badlands. Animals or ghosts, I saw them too! Moving so fast and shimmering. And later I had frozen hands trying to work the key against the lock. I should have known then what was coming.

In some of my smaller works of early 2011 I have stepped back from the use of color in option of blacks,whites and greys. I suppose this is in response to the personal alienation of my life in the city. I am working on large drawings of some of these women on paper with only pencils and graphite and I will post some of those soon.

There are two opening night events being hosted by African Film Festival Inc. the first being Wednesday April 6th. This is not a free event to attend.
The second event will be the big Gala on Friday April 8th and this event will be a paid ticket for entry. The ticket price will be around $xxx.00 but it will be fully catered with a bar.

So here we have a bit of a milestone in that I have reached TWENTY abstract busts! You may recognize this image from an earlier post as Abstract Bust 9a. This one is has been expanded though to include her head ornamentation as well as some of her clothing.
This image is the study for a larger oil which I think will be on display next year at a VERY high profile venue in Manhattan. I don’t want to go too much into details at this time for fear of jinxing it but I will relate all the details to you as they become more definite in the future. I have already lined out this image on a 36x48 inch linen and I must say she is going to be a stunner. Stay tuned for more details forthcoming.

One of the great advantages of this current technique of abstract busts and portraits that I am doing is that I can tap the ages for inspiration. These images are at once ancient as well as modern both in their presentation and also in the people pictured. So far we have seen faces from all the way back to ancient Greece and Rome (such as the following Roman fellow seen here) all the way up to present day in the form of self portraits and portraits of people in my life. Its a pleasure to encapsulate the human ages and build a bridge that spans the dark musty corners of antiquity to our modern chrome polished existence.

Tribute to G.R.'s Eight Nurses

These are very small works I have done here but I know that once they are properly framed together in one large professionally matted set they will look great. Here is a portrait of my beloved Prudence. This image will eventually be used in another larger oil painting intended for the galleries. I think I will keep this one for myself.
I have started another oil in this series in which I have honed in on the black lines and they are now crisp and fine in detail. In this portrait the lines may seem a bit sloppy in places but I think its okay for this piece. After all this is an experimental painting. I have ordered some big linens so I look forward to starting those as soon as they are stretched.

So here is the first of the portraits in oil. I am working this smaller size to assess and resolve some problems in the technique and also because I am trying to secure the funds for large linens. It has proven successful in my opinion in translating from the smaller mixed media works to a larger oil painting. There was some doubt in my mind if these would work in the larger format or if they would be better left in the smaller size. Now that I see it can be done, my goal for these are large full scale paintings like Chuck Close has done. I have three more of these currently in the works which I will share with you later.

Well please do not think that because of my relative quiet here that I have not been busy. Lots going on... too much to innumerate at the moment. At any rate please see the latest "Abstract Bust". She is rather regal I think. Overall this series seems to be oscillating between busts and portraits.
I am in the process of painting some of the portraits you have seen below in a larger format and in oils. Studies for the large linens coming later this year... will update with images soon.

Here is third in the 25-30 (or more who knows) part series: Abstract Busts. In the near future I will be starting my 2010 cycle of work in preparation for the 2011 show time season. I am going to be doing 36x40 inch oil paintings of some of my favorites from these smaller mixed media works. I am feeling confident that these oil paintings will prove to be a seminal stage in my career.

Here is the second installment of what will be a twenty to thirty piece series of abstract female busts. This one is a bit more fragmented and dynamic than the last which is something I enjoy although I think the last one may be a bit more charming in that "soft focus" sort of way. It looks to be a city map at first glance but when you stand back a bit you can see the image of the girl present itself more clearly. It would seem that this duality of multiple images presented in a spatially flat plane is fast becoming my signature style. Works for me....

In these times of stress and strain and long cold days that never seem to end, I sometimes need to take a little detour from the big looming deadline of "New York City Abstracts" preparation. So I offer for you the following picture. These little mixed media paintings are so much fun to do that they remind me that painting isn't all about business and taking over the world etc.
So here you have it: a small sojourn from the big path that is my solo show prep life along a little side trail that was quite fun for me to indulge in for a moment. That being said, now I have to get back to the big task at hand. The next post on this blog will include images of the final three pieces for this years 2/20 gallery show.

new york city abstracts sneak a peek

So here is a peak at what I have been up to for the last year. What you see below is six of the nine paintings I will be showing at this years 2/20 gallery show. Of course, when looking at these on the web you are missing out on one of the most important aspects in these works and that is the surface. Each of these paintings took a good deal of time working up the surface which really is one of the strong points in these paintings. I am excited about all of these paintings each for their own reasons. These were notoriously difficult to document but we did our best with the conditions we have. The final three works not pictured here are a bit smaller : 18x24 linen mounted on panels. They further explore the idea of melting snow/ice and I am thinking of doing a whole series of larger works in that style. As soon as I finish them I will post images here on this page. There is a post of this painting when it was a work in progress which you can still view a couple of posts down from here. Here is a detail of the finished "NYC Leaves in Snow,Central Park" . My lighting situation is still horrible so this shot looks way too yellow and dark. I cant afford a new camera or lightning (this is so frustrating I could cry) so I have to make due with what I have. Many apologies for this sad fact.

symbiosis of sorts

The philosophy of this years works is all about an overall cohesive theme, that of course being nature as viewed from the abstract eye. It has proved to be a rewarding challenge for me to curtail my naturally diverse sensibility in regards to my compositions and hone my eye as one might with very delicate machines. With that in mind I have already begun to contemplate my 2010-2011 body of work. At this point I am intending to marry my older character driven works with what I have developed here in the 2009-2010 season. That is to say I envision a union of polished abstract landscapes with selectively placed human elements in the form of 'small characters'. *update: The 2010-2011 concept has changed to large scale portraits and busts* This years landscapes shall prove to be the elegant and complex backdrops for the equally compelling human dramas. If you will, please look at the following pictures and imagine images of this ilk to be subtlely intertwined with the 'abstracts of nature' in the soon to be future works.

Sorry about the picture quality but I am still trying to struggle through bad lighting and a camera designed for tourists on a cheap vacation. Please try and see the real thing in March and maybe by then I can sort out my documentation woes.
